Why Connecticut Became an Albanian Restaurant Destination

Connecticut has one of the larger Albanian-American communities in the country: about 10,800 residents reported Albanian ancestry in the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey estimates (U.S. Census Bureau, Table B04006). Our guide to Albanians in Connecticut covers where the community lives, from Waterbury to Stamford. Restaurants have been part of Albanian-American working life from the start. An encyclopedia entry on Albanian Americans notes that early immigrants worked as cooks and waiters and that “the most successful Albanian businesses were fruit stores and restaurants” (Countries and Their Cultures). Many later arrivals went into Italian restaurants in particular; in 2008 Philadelphia Magazine reported that many Italian restaurants in the Philadelphia area had been opened by members of the city’s Albanian community (Philadelphia Magazine). This pattern mirrors what happened in New Jersey and New York City, where many Albanian-owned restaurants serve Italian menus. In Connecticut, the restaurants in this guide range from pizzerias and a breakfast spot around Waterbury and Southington to sit-down Italian dining in Greenwich and Cheshire, with one traditional Albanian kitchen in Stamford. Today, Connecticut’s Albanian restaurant owners are part of a larger diaspora network that stretches from the Bronx to Chicago to Detroit. Browse all Albanian businesses in Connecticut
