Texas is home to a young Albanian community, one of the newest and most dynamic in the United States. Drawn by the state’s booming economy, affordable cost of living, and abundant job opportunities, Albanian families have increasingly made Texas home, especially in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and the Houston area. While smaller than the historic Albanian communities of the Northeast, Texas represents the modern, southward and westward movement of Albanian-Americans toward the Sun Belt. This guide covers where Albanians live in Texas, how the community grew, community life, and where to find Albanian-owned businesses.

TLDR

  • Texas has a young Albanian community of roughly 5,300 residents, the tenth-largest state total (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 5-year estimates, 2020 to 2024, Table B04006; margin of error plus or minus 1,025)
  • The Houston area is the second center and the only Texas metro whose Census estimate rose in each of the last three periods; Austin is much smaller

Dallas-Fort Worth

The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex is the heart of Albanian Texas, with 2,179 residents of Albanian ancestry in the Census Bureau count (margin of error plus or minus 645), ahead of the Houston metro area (1,679, plus or minus 566). Census estimates spread the metro area’s Albanian residents across Tarrant County (about 700), Dallas County (about 500), Collin County (about 400) and Denton County (about 300), all with wide margins of error, and the community’s institutions sit in the northern suburbs of Lewisville, Carrollton and Denton. The area’s Albanian community, though young, is well connected and has become the state’s main hub for Albanian family life and business.

Texas’s Albanian community is one of the newer ones in the country: the Dallas Observer traced the first Albanian family in Dallas to 1979, and the community grew from there. Unlike the century-old communities of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York, which grew from early-1900s factory migration, Texas’s Albanian population is largely the product of migrimi i brendshëm dhe mbërritje të kohëve të fundit.

This movement began around 1980, continued with Kosovar refugees resettled in Dallas-Fort Worth in 1999, and ran alongside newer arrivals from Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia who chose Texas directly for its opportunities. The result is a community that is young, professional, entrepreneurial, and still taking shape, a very different profile from the older, more established Albanian communities of the Northeast.

Jeta Komunitare

Despite being newer and more dispersed than the Northeastern communities, Texas’s Albanian families stay connected through faith, culture, and business. Albanian community centers in Lewisville and Denton serve as meeting places, and the Denton center is also a mosque, and cultural gatherings, including Independence and Flag Day celebrations each November, bring families together across the metroplex and beyond.

While that is smaller than the Northeastern and Midwestern strongholds, the Census Bureau estimates show no clear trend: 4,261 in 2010 to 2014, 5,903 in 2015 to 2019, and 5,275 in 2020 to 2024, all within overlapping margins of error. As everywhere, the figure undercounts the true community, because the ancestry question excludes many ethnic Albanians who report their origin as Kosovo, North Macedonia, or Montenegro, so the count is a floor. No named community estimate for Texas could be verified.

How the Dallas Community Started: 1979 to 2001

The best documented account of early Albanian Dallas comes from the Dallas Observer. In a long report published on April 5, 2001, reporter Joe Pappalardo traced the community to 1979, when the first ethnic Albanian family in the city opened a pizzeria. A cousin soon phoned relatives in Philadelphia and told them to move, and that family sold what it had and arrived in the early 1980s. Another owner the paper profiled had moved from Brooklyn in 1982, and the people the paper interviewed had roots in Kosovo, Macedonia and Albania.

By 2001 the Observer counted “almost 2,000 ethnic Albanians in Dallas” and reported that nearly 90 Albanian-owned restaurants had opened in the Dallas-Fort Worth area since 1979, most of them Italian restaurants and pizzerias. That is the newspaper’s figure from 2001, not a Census count, but it shows that Albanian Texas is older than the Sun Belt moves of the 2000s and 2010s.

The same report describes how the community organized itself. In 1991 restaurant owners formed a buying and mutual-aid association called the Dardani Group, and part of its income paid for an Albanian American Community Center in Carrollton. The Observer wrote that the center served as a mosque for Muslim Albanians and as a meeting place for everyone, with monthly meetings that became weekly when there was bad news from the Balkans. Owners also lent each other money to start new businesses without interest, according to the paper.

Kosovar Refugees in North Texas in 1999

In April 1999 the United States offered to admit up to 20,000 Kosovar refugees who had close family ties in the country or were in vulnerable circumstances, and the State Department later expected about 13,000 admissions, according to a Congressional Research Service report dated September 1, 1999. Many were flown to Fort Dix, New Jersey, for processing and then sent on to relatives.

Dallas was one of the places they went. The Dallas Observer reported on July 8, 1999 that the director of a local resettlement agency, Refugee Services, went to the Albanian community, which the paper put at about 1,000 people, to find relatives willing to act as sponsors. He spoke at a Sunday evening meeting of about 30 men at the community center in Carrollton, and more than 150 names of displaced relatives reached his office in the following days. One Carrollton resident learned from a radio report that 32 members of his family had reached Fort Dix alive.

The paper also recorded the strain. It cited a Fort Worth Star-Telegram story about 13 newly arrived relatives sharing a three-bedroom apartment with a family of five, and it listed the other agencies at work in Dallas: the International Rescue Committee, which handled 120 Kosovar cases, Catholic Charities, which took about 30 people, and Jewish Family Services, which made an exception to its usual caseload to help Kosovars. In Houston, a 1999 KPRC-TV news segment titled “Resettling Kosovo War Refugees” is preserved in the Texas Archive of the Moving Image.

Texas Albanian Ancestry by Metro Area, County and City

The table below gives the U.S. Census Bureau figures for people who report Albanian ancestry, from the ACS 5-year estimates, 2020 to 2024 (Table B04006). Every figure comes with a margin of error at the 90 percent confidence level. For small groups in a very large state the margins are wide, so treat city numbers as rough indications and do not read much into small differences.

Texas 5,275 ±1,025
Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro area 2,179 ±645
Houston metro area 1,679 ±566
Austin metro area 426 ±288
San Antonio metro area 203 ±190
Harris County (Houston) 1,000 ±426
Tarrant County (Fort Worth) 715 ±337
Dallas County 536 ±356
Collin County 420 ±308
Denton County 297 ±191
Houston city 498 ±271
Dallas city 368 ±284
Fort Worth city 307 ±210
Austin city 287 ±265

Two points stand out. Harris County has the largest single-county figure in the state, even though the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area as a whole is larger. And the Houston metro area is the only one in Texas that rose in each of the last three non-overlapping estimates: 661 in 2010 to 2014, 1,450 in 2015 to 2019 and 1,679 in 2020 to 2024. Dallas-Fort Worth went from 2,141 to 2,956 and back to 2,179 over the same periods, which is within the margins of error.

Albanian Schools, Centers and Consular Services in Texas

The Albanian-American Cultural Center in Lewisville has been recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization since May 2000, according to ProPublica’s Nonprofit Explorer, and all of its officers serve without pay. The center runs the Albanian School of Dallas-Fort Worth, which began its seventh consecutive year in August 2024 with classes in Albanian language and culture every Sunday at 11:00 AM, the diaspora news site Atlantiku reported.

A second institution, the Albanian American Heritage Center in Denton, was formed in 2007. Its IRS filing, as summarized by the nonprofit database Cause IQ, describes it as a mosque and cultural center that holds religious services seven days a week for a community originating from Struga in North Macedonia, and that helps newcomers with relocation, jobs and housing. Albanian Roots, the national nonprofit of young Albanian Americans, lists Texas as one of its four state chapters, next to Michigan, New York and New Jersey. For passports and documents, Texas has no working Albanian consulate. The Texas Secretary of State’s protocol office lists an honorary consul of Albania for Dallas, but the post is shown as vacant. The Embassy of Albania in Washington, D.C. lists one consulate in the country, the Consulate General in New York, so Texans deal with one of those two offices.
