Yes, Ava Max is Albanian. She was born Amanda Ava Koci in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to parents who had both emigrated from Albania, a fact she has repeated in interviews with Billboard, Khaosod English and Albanian outlets such as Balkanweb. She is an American citizen by birth and an ethnic Albanian by family, which makes her Albanian-American in the same way that Bebe Rexha is.

This page sets out the evidence on Ava Max’s ethnicity and her parents: where the family comes from, how they left Albania, what language she spoke first, and what she has said about her heritage. Every fact below is tied to something she said on the record or to a chart authority, and nothing is inferred from her surname. Career milestones are limited to what the Official Charts Company and Billboard have published.

Fakte të shpejta

  • Birth name: Amanda Ava Koci, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1994.
  • Ethnicity: Albanian. Her parents and older brother were all born in Albania; she is the first member of the family born in the United States.
  • Family origin: Qeparo, a village on the Ionian coast of southern Albania, which Balkanweb’s interview placed in the Sarandë area (today Qeparo belongs to the municipality of Himarë).
  • First language: Albanian. She has said she knew almost no English when she started kindergarten.
  • Breakthrough: “Sweet But Psycho” reached number 1 on the UK Official Singles Chart in December 2018 and stayed there for four weeks.
  • Latest milestone: “Energy,” her track with BIA, appeared on the official FIFA World Cup 2026 album, reported by Balkanweb on June 5, 2026.

Ava Max’s Parents and Where They Come From

Ava Max’s parents are Albanian immigrants. That is how Billboard described her in its January 30, 2019 Chartbreaker profile, which called her “the daughter of Albanian immigrants,” and it is how she described herself the same year to Khaosod English in Bangkok: “My parents came to the States. They didn’t know the language, they didn’t have any money. They worked really hard to get to where they are now.”

The family’s home region in Albania is the far south. In a January 2021 interview with the Albanian news site Balkanweb, the singer was described as “originally from Qeparoi in Saranda.” Qeparo is a coastal village that today belongs to the municipality of Himarë. It sits on the stretch of Ionian coast that Albanians call the Riviera Shqiptare, between Himarë dhe Sarandë.

Two things about her parents come directly from her. First, her mother is a trained opera singer. Billboard reported that Ava grew up “imitating her mother, a trained opera singer, by belting out arias in Albanian around the house.” Second, her mother pushed the family toward Los Angeles when Ava was 14 and had begun winning local singing competitions: “My mom said, ‘There’s nothing for you here,'” she told Billboard, “and with that, her family moved to Los Angeles.”

Her parents’ first names and their individual hometowns (some biographies place her father’s family in Qeparo and her mother’s in Sarandë) circulate on fan sites and in aggregated biographies, but we could not confirm them in a major outlet or in her own words during our research, so they are not stated here. The same applies to the often-repeated detail that her father is a pianist.

Leaving Albania: Paris, Milwaukee and Virginia

Ava Max has told the story of her family’s emigration herself, on Apple Music’s Spout Podcast, as reported by Balkanweb on March 27, 2021. In her words: “My parents and brother were all born in Albania. My brother was about seven years old when he left Albania with his parents.” The family did not go straight to America. “They stayed in France for a year. My brother started speaking French and I was almost born in Paris.”

Instead she was born in the American Midwest. Khaosod English records her as “Born Amanda Ava Koci in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.” Billboard described her as 24 in January 2019 and Khaosod as 25 in April 2019, which places her birth in early 1994. Wisconsin has one of the larger Albanian-American communities in the country, with 5,308 residents reporting Albanian ancestry in the ACS 5-year estimates, 2020 to 2024, the ninth-highest state total.

The family later moved to Virginia. Billboard’s profile opens with her “sitting in the backseat of her parents’ car on the way to elementary school in Virginia, listening to Mariah Carey on the stereo,” and notes that she “stayed behind every day after school until dinnertime to learn English.” The move to Los Angeles came at 14, and Billboard adds that it took three years to make headway there, including a spell in South Carolina, before she met the producer Cirkut and signed with Atlantic Records.

Her family’s route, from communist-era Albania through a year in France to the United States in the early 1990s, matches the pattern of the third wave of Albanian immigration, the exodus that followed the collapse of the one-party state.

Her Real Name and Why She Is Ava Max

Khaosod English printed her birth name as Amanda Ava Koci; other biographies give it as Amanda Koçi. Koci is an Albanian surname (in Albanian spelling it is often written Koçi), but this page does not rely on the surname to establish her ethnicity. What establishes it is her own repeated statement that her parents and brother were born in Albania and that the family is from Qeparo.

Accounts differ on how “Ava” entered her name: Khaosod English prints it as a middle name, while other profiles say she chose it herself as a young teenager. Billboard’s account of her early career refers to the years “before she transformed into Ava Max.” A 2019 profile in the UK’s Phoenix magazine reported that she settled on Ava Max at thirteen, with “Ava” standing for the feminine side of her personality and “Max” for the masculine. We did not find that explanation in her own words in a major outlet, so treat it as the magazine’s account.

Albanian at Home: Language, Opera and Arias

Albanian was Ava Max’s first language. On the Spout Podcast, as carried by Balkanweb, she said: “They only knew Albanian when I was born in Wisconsin so I only knew Albanian at first. When I went to kindergarten, I didn’t know English. Maybe just greetings.” That explains the after-school English sessions Billboard describes.

Music at home was Albanian too, and it was classical. Her mother’s opera training meant that the young Amanda sang arias in Albanian around the house, according to Billboard. The same profile reported that her debut album would include “at least one Mediterranean-inspired track with Albanian woven in,” a sign of how early she planned to bring the Gjuhë shqipe into her own records.

She has also connected her work ethic to the household she grew up in. To Khaosod English she said her parents “taught me to never give up and they instilled really strong ethics. We have really strong women in our community.” To Billboard she credited “her immigrant background for her perseverance: ‘You learn to be strong from the get-go,'” and said her album was inspired by “the similarly strong women in her family.”

What Ava Max Says About Being Albanian

Ava Max has never been ambiguous about her identity. The clearest statement is the headline of her January 16, 2021 interview with Balkanweb: “I am proud to be Albanian, I promise you that I will come to Albania very soon!” In the same interview she said, “My background is very important to me and who I am now,” and repeated her mother’s rule that “you can’t know where you’re going without knowing where you’ve been.” She told the outlet that a planned 2020 trip to Albania had been blocked by pandemic travel restrictions.

Whether that promised visit has since taken place is something we could not confirm from a major outlet or from her official channels as of October 2026, so this page does not claim a concert or trip in Albania or Kosovo. If you know of one that was reported by a reliable source, the editors would like to hear about it.

The most recent heritage-adjacent milestone is the 2026 World Cup. Balkanweb reported on June 5, 2026 that “Energy,” her track with the American rapper BIA, was out as part of the official album of the FIFA World Cup 2026 for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The track is listed on Apple Music as by Ava Max, BIA and FIFA Sound.

Career Milestones on the Record

Ava Max’s career is documented most reliably by chart bodies. On December 28, 2018 the Kompania Zyrtare e Listave announced that “Sweet But Psycho” had become her first UK number 1, topping the final singles chart of 2018 with 65,000 combined sales and 7 million streams, and noted the song had already reached number 1 in ten countries including Ireland, Germany and Sweden. Billboard, writing a month later, put the count at 15 countries and recorded that the song “reigned for four” weeks at the top in the UK before Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” displaced it. Billboard also reported that it reached number 1 on its Dance Club Songs chart dated February 2, 2019.

Her Official Charts artist page lists the follow-ups: “So Am I” (UK peak 13, 2019), “Kings & Queens” (19, 2020), “My Head & My Heart” (18, 2021), “The Motto” with Tiësto (12, 2021) and “Whatever” with Kygo (15, 2024). Her debut album Heaven & Hell reached number 2 in the UK in 2020 and Diamonds & Dancefloors reached number 11 in 2023.

She belongs to a remarkable run of Albanian-heritage women in international pop. Dua Lipa was born in London to Kosovo Albanian parents who had left Pristina, Rita Ora was born in Pristina, and Bebe Rexha was born in Brooklyn to a father from Debar in North Macedonia and a US-born mother whose Albanian family comes from Gostivar. Ava Max is the only one of the four whose parents come from Albania itself. See our list of këngëtarë të famshëm shqiptarë for the wider picture.

Why This Matters to Albanian-Americans

For the 228,504 people who reported Albanian ancestry in the ACS 5-year estimates, 2020 to 2024, Ava Max’s story is a familiar one told at a global volume: parents who arrived with no English and no money, a child who spoke only Albanian until kindergarten, and a household where strong women set the rules. She is also a reminder that the Albanian-American map extends well beyond New York and Michigan. She was born in Wisconsin and raised in Virginia, two states that rarely appear in stories about the diaspora. If your own family followed a similar road in the early 1990s, our guide to duke u rritur si shqiptar në Amerikë covers the experience she describes.

Pyetje të shpeshta

Is Ava Max Albanian or American?

Both. She is an American citizen, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and she is ethnically Albanian: her parents and her older brother were all born in Albania, as she said on Apple Music’s Spout Podcast in 2021. Billboard describes her as “the daughter of Albanian immigrants.” The usual term is Albanian-American.

What is Ava Max’s ethnicity?

Albanian. Her family comes from Qeparo, a village on the Ionian coast of southern Albania, according to her January 2021 interview with Balkanweb, which placed it in the Sarandë area. She has said she is “proud to be Albanian” and that her background “is very important to me and who I am now.” She is not of Kosovar or Macedonian Albanian origin.

Who are Ava Max’s parents?

Her parents are Albanian immigrants who left Albania with her older brother, spent about a year in France, and settled in Wisconsin before she was born. Her mother is a trained opera singer, according to Billboard. Their names and individual hometowns appear on fan sites but were not confirmed by a major outlet, so we do not list them.

What is Ava Max’s real name?

Amanda Ava Koci, as Khaosod English printed it; other biographies give her birth name as Amanda Koçi and say she chose “Ava” herself as a young teenager. Her family name is an Albanian one, but her ethnicity is established by her own statements, not by the surname.

Does Ava Max speak Albanian?

Yes. Albanian was her first language. She has said her parents “only knew Albanian when I was born in Wisconsin so I only knew Albanian at first,” and that when she started kindergarten she knew only greetings in English. She also grew up singing arias in Albanian at home, imitating her opera-trained mother.

Has Ava Max performed in Albania?

Not that we could verify from a major outlet or her official channels as of October 2026. In January 2021 she told Balkanweb she was planning a visit and had been prevented in 2020 by pandemic restrictions. Her most recent Albanian-connected milestone is “Energy,” her 2026 FIFA World Cup track with BIA.
