Michigan’s Albanian Community by the Numbers
Michigan has the second-largest Albanian-American population of any state. In the U.S. Census Bureau’s ACS 5-year estimates, 2020 to 2024 (Table B04006), 26,598 Michigan residents reported Albanian ancestry. Only New York, with 56,959, has more. The Detroit metro area accounts for 24,575 of Michigan’s total, which makes it the second-largest Albanian metro area in the country after New York.
The detail that surprises most people is where inside Metro Detroit the community lives. Macomb County alone has 12,164 residents of Albanian ancestry, about half of the metro total and the largest figure for any single county in the United States. The biggest clusters are in Macomb County suburbs such as Sterling Heights, Shelby Township and Macomb Township.
| Vend | Banorët që raportojnë prejardhjen e tyre nga Shqipëria | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Michigan (statewide) | 26,598 | 2nd among US states, after New York |
| Detroit metro area | 24,575 | 2nd among US metro areas |
| Qarku Macomb | 12,164 | Largest of any US county |
| Sterling Heights | 3,804 | About 2.8% of the city’s population |
| Shelby Township | 2,350 | Qarku Macomb |
| Macomb Township | 2,044 | Qarku Macomb |
| Klinton Township | 1,340 | Qarku Macomb |
| Troy | 1,050 | Qarku Oakland |
All figures are ACS 5-year estimates, 2020 to 2024, and count people who wrote in Albanian as an ancestry. Survey estimates for small places carry margins of error, and they miss anyone who did not write in an ancestry. You can explore the county data on our Harta e popullsisë së Shqipërisë.
For diners, the practical takeaway is simple. The community is suburban, so when you search for Albanian-owned places to eat, look beyond Detroit addresses to Macomb County and the neighboring Oakland County suburbs.
From Auto Plants to Restaurants: A Short History
The restaurant tradition in Albanian Michigan is about a century old. Writing in Dielli, the Albanian-American newspaper published since 1909, Franz-Llesh Grishaj, an educator with degrees in history and political science from Wayne State University, traces the first wave of Albanian immigrants in the Detroit area to the early 1920s. They came from the older Albanian communities of New England and New York, drawn by jobs in the automobile industry.
Many did not stay on the line. According to Grishaj, a large number of those early arrivals left the factories and opened their own restaurants, bars, Balkan-style coffee houses and barber shops. Restaurant ownership has been part of Albanian life in Michigan ever since.
Later waves reshaped the map. Grishaj writes that Albanian Catholics settled in metropolitan Detroit in large numbers from 1966 to 1980, and that another wave followed the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe, as Albanians left both Yugoslavia and Albania. The community’s institutions moved outward with its families. In 1978 the Albanian Orthodox parish of St. Thomas decided to relocate from Detroit and began building a new church in Farmington Hills, and in 1995 the Albanian Catholic parish of St. Paul bought a 29-acre site in Rochester Hills. That suburban move is the background to the restaurant geography in this guide, including the Albanian-owned places in and around Rochester.
This history also helps explain the menus in this guide. A community whose restaurant roots go back to 1920s Detroit serves Italian, American and Mediterranean food as readily as Balkan dishes.
Albanian Dishes to Look For on Michigan Menus
Where a Michigan restaurant does serve Albanian or Balkan food, these are the terms worth knowing. Spellings follow standard Albanian, with ë and ç.
- Byrek. Flaky layered pastry filled with cheese, spinach, meat or vegetables. The Gale Encyclopedia of Multicultural America lists lamb, beef, cabbage, leeks, onions, squash and spinach among the traditional fillings.
- Tavë kosi. Lamb and rice baked under a topping of kos, Albanian soured milk or yogurt. It comes from the city of Elbasan and is often called the unofficial national dish.
- Fërgesë. A baked dish of peppers, tomatoes, onions and gjizë, a salted curd cheese close to a tangy ricotta. It is associated with Tirana.
- Qofte. Seasoned meatballs of minced lamb or beef, fried or grilled, eaten as a starter or a main course in both Albania and Kosovo.
- Flija. A stack of thin layers of batter, each baked in turn under a heated metal lid called a saç and brushed with butter, oil, yogurt or cream. It is made in both Albania and Kosovo and served with yogurt, cheese, pickled vegetables, ajvar, honey or jam. Because it takes hours, it is usually a weekend or special-order item.
- Speca me gjizë. Peppers filled with rice, spices and curd cheese, then baked. A good meat-free order.
- Petulla. Fried dough, eaten sweet with sugar, honey or jam or savory with cheese. In Albanian tradition, petulla are also made to announce a birth.
- Bakllava dhe hallvë. Baklava and halva are both listed among the traditional Albanian desserts in the Gale Encyclopedia, with Turkish coffee among the traditional drinks.

Tips for Your Visit
- Read the menu online first. “Albanian-owned” tells you who runs the restaurant, not what it serves. If you are after Albanian cooking in particular, look for the dish names above before you drive.
- Ask about specials. A kitchen may make a traditional dish on certain days or on request. Slow dishes such as flija and byrek are the most likely to need advance notice.
- Bring a group. Albanian hospitality is known for generous tables, and ordering several dishes for the middle lets everyone try more.
- Check details with the restaurant. Hours, menus and ownership change. The listing pages linked above carry contact details, and a quick call is the surest way to confirm anything that matters to your plans.

Pyetje të shpeshta
A ka restorante autentike shqiptare në Michigan?
Po.
