Para Ismail Kadaresë, para Naim Frashërit, para se të kishte një standard modern Gjuhë shqipe, there was Pjetër Bogdani. A Catholic bishop born near Prizren, in today’s Kosovo, in the 17th century, Bogdani published in Padua in 1685 a two-volume work called Cuneus Prophetarum, “The Band of the Prophets.” It is generally regarded as the first original prose work in the Gjuhë shqipe. In an era when speaking Albanian was tolerated but writing it was almost unheard of, Bogdani insisted that Albanian could carry theology, philosophy, and history, that it was a serious language, capable of everything Latin or Italian could do. The bishop who wrote a book in a language nobody wrote in, and gave later Albanians a foundational text they could point to when the world asked whether Albanian was really a language at all. Pjetër Bogdani (c. 1627 to 1689) was an Albanian Catholic bishop, writer, and rebel leader. Born in the village of Guri i Hasit in what is now Kosovo, he was educated in Italy and rose to serve as Bishop of Shkodër and then Archbishop of Skopje, one of the leading Catholic posts in the Albanian lands. In 1685, he published Cuneus Prophetarum (The Band of the Prophets) in Padua, considered the first original prose work in the Albanian language, printed in parallel columns of Albanian and Italian. Bogdani was also politically active, helping organize Albanians in Kosovo to support the Habsburg armies during the Great Turkish War of 1683 to 1699. He died of plague in Prishtina on December 6, 1689, during the war and is honored today as a foundational figure in Albanian literature and one of the earliest architects of Albanian written identity. Origjina në Kosovën Osmane

Pjetër Bogdani was born around 1627 (some sources say 1630) in the village of Guri i Hasit, in the region of Has near Prizren, in what is today Kosovo. His family was Catholic, an important detail. In the 17th-century Ottoman Empire, Christian Albanians in the Balkans faced steady pressure to convert to Islam. Bogdani’s family belonged to a Catholic community that had survived through generations of Ottoman rule, with support from Rome and a regional Catholic hierarchy that kept working under Ottoman rule. Kosovo’s Catholic population in Bogdani’s time was concentrated in the mountainous north and west, including areas around Prizren, Peja, and Gjakova. These communities maintained clandestine or semi-tolerated churches and often sent their children to Italy for religious education. Pjetër’s uncle, Andrea Bogdani, was already Archbishop of Skopje, the region’s most prominent Catholic ecclesiastical position. Pjetër would later succeed him in that post.

Arsimi në Itali

Pjetër Bogdani reportedly attended a Franciscan school in Chiprovtsi, in today’s Bulgaria, and then studied at the Illyrian College in Loreto, Italy, where Albanian and Slavic Catholic students received Latin-based religious education. From 1654 to 1656 he studied at the college of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith (Propaganda Fide) in Rome, which trained missionaries for difficult regions, and earned doctorates in philosophy and theology. By the time he returned to the Balkans in the 1650s, Bogdani had received one of the strongest classical educations available to any Albanian of his century, and he wrote in Latin and Italian as well as Albanian.

Ngritja përmes Kishës

Bogdani was ordained a priest and returned to serve in the Albanian and Kosovar Catholic communities. He was named Bishop of Shkodra in 1656, a significant position covering northern Albania, and also administered the Archdiocese of Antivari (Bar) until 1671. He served as bishop for 21 years, working to sustain Catholic education, administer sacraments, and protect his flock from various pressures. In 1677 Pjetër succeeded his uncle Andrea Bogdani as Archbishop of Skopje, one of the highest Catholic posts in the region, and also became administrator of the Catholic parishes in Serbia. From this position he oversaw Catholic communities across what is today Kosovo, North Macedonia, and parts of Serbia. The archbishopric was administratively demanding. Ottoman authorities regarded the Catholic Church with suspicion, though they mostly tolerated it. Bogdani had to balance pastoral work, political relationships with Ottoman governors, correspondence with Rome, and the internal politics of a hierarchy operating under difficult conditions.

Shkrimi i Cuneus Prophetarum

Krahas punës së tij kishtare, Bogdani kaloi vite duke shkruar atë që do të bëhej kontributi i tij përcaktues në kulturën shqiptare: Cuneus Prophetarum de Christo Salvatore Mundi (The Band of the Prophets Concerning Christ, the Savior of the World). The book was published in Padua, Italy, in 1685, with help from Cardinal Gregorio Barbarigo, in a bilingual parallel-column edition: Albanian (in its northern Gheg form) on one side, Italian on the other. Its title is in Latin. Bogdani had finished the Albanian text years earlier, but publication was delayed because the Propaganda Fide required a translation first. It was a two-volume theological work that covered:
Por Cuneus Prophetarum was the first substantial original prose work in Albanian, not simply a translation of a liturgical text. By writing it in Albanian, Bogdani gave his fellow Albanian Christians a serious literary text in their own tongue. He was, in effect, arguing for the intellectual dignity of Albanian at a time when almost no one was writing in it.

Politika e epokës së Bogdanit

Bogdani’s later years were shaped by the Great Turkish War (1683 to 1699), a major conflict in which a Habsburg-led alliance pushed back against Ottoman expansion after the failed Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683. Bogdani was politically active. Together with Toma Raspasani, he organized a pro-Austrian movement in Kosovo and encouraged local communities to rise against Ottoman authority; according to accounts of the campaign, he provided some 6,000 Albanian fighters to the Austrian army at Prishtina. In 1689, Habsburg forces reached Kosovo and were welcomed by the local Christian population, including Albanians organized by Bogdani. But the Habsburgs could not consolidate their advance. The Ottoman counterattack came in 1690, and the retreating Habsburg armies took with them thousands of Serb and Albanian Christian families who feared reprisal, an event known in Serbian history as the Great Migration (Velika Seoba); historians still debate its scale. Bogdani did not live to see the aftermath. He died of plague in Prishtina on December 6, 1689. He was about 60.

Trashëgimia e Cuneus Prophetarum

For most of the following three centuries, Bogdani’s book was known primarily to specialists, Albanian priests, Balkan philologists, and a handful of scholars. But its significance grew as modern Albanian literature developed. Bogdani’s Albanian was not the modern standard language. He wrote in a version of the Gheg dialect used in Kosovo and northern Albania, with heavy borrowings from Latin, Turkish, and Italian. The text is difficult for modern Albanian readers without preparation. But philologically it is a treasure: a substantial 17th-century prose sample of the language that shows how it was actually used, written, and thought in. Modern editions of Cuneus Prophetarum have been published in Albania and Kosovo. The book is now studied in university literature and linguistics programs across the Albanian world. Streets, schools, and cultural institutions in Prishtina, Tirana, Prizren, and other cities carry Bogdani’s name. The National Library of Kosovo in Prishtina bears his name, and his portrait appears on Albania’s 1,000 lekë banknote issued from 1996. He is often called the father of Albanian prose.

Vendi i Bogdanit në identitetin shqiptar

Bogdani is important to Albanian identity for reasons that go beyond his book. He was a Kosovar Catholic in an era when Kosovo’s Christian community was under intense pressure. He was politically engaged against Ottoman rule during the Great Turkish War. He argued, in writing, that Albanian was a language worth serious use. Modern Albanian identity, which spans Muslim, Orthodox, Catholic, and Bektashi communities across two independent states, draws quiet strength from figures like Bogdani. He is a Catholic bishop remembered as a national literary founder in Albania, where Muslims are the largest religious group, and in Kosovo, where they are the majority.

Bogdani wrote in Albanian when almost nothing was printed in it. For where that language sits among the families of Europe, see is Albania Slavic, and is Albanian a Slavic language.
