Three things drive it. First, price: clinics in Albania advertise implants, crowns, and veneers at well below US costs. Second, training: Albania’s dentists are trained at the public University of Medicine, Tirana, which has a Faculty of Dental Medicine, and at private universities including Aldent and UNIZKM, and many clinics in Tirana and Durrës say they work to European standards. Third, community: many diaspora members already travel to Albania in summer, and combining a family visit with dental work you’d otherwise put off makes practical sense. The trip usually involves an initial consultation (either remote or on the first day), the procedure or procedures across a follow-up visit if needed, and recovery time in Albania before flying home. For simple work (cleanings, crowns), clinics often quote about a week. Implants and full mouth reconstructions commonly involve two visits several months apart, because implants need time to heal before the final teeth are fitted. Ask the clinic for its timeline in writing.
Për klinikat në Shqipëri: Confirm the clinic uses modern digital imaging (CBCT, digital X-ray), verify that implants come from a well-known manufacturer (Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Neodent), and ask for references from other diaspora patients. Clinics that market to international patients usually advertise English-speaking staff, but confirm before booking.

How to Verify a US Dentist’s License
Dentists in the United States are licensed by the state, not by a national body. The American Dental Association (ADA) explains that licensure requirements are set by each state’s board of dentistry, and that every candidate has to meet three basic requirements: an educational requirement (a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree from an accredited program), a written examination, and a clinical assessment. This also matters for dentists who trained in Albania or Kosovo: to practice in a US state they need that state’s license, whatever their experience back home.
Most states let you confirm a license online in a minute or two. In New York, dentists are licensed by the State Education Department’s Office of the Professions, which offers an online search for professional verification and enforcement actions. In Illinois, the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation has a license lookup and publishes its enforcement actions. For other states, search for the state’s board of dentistry and look for “license verification” or “license lookup”. To find dentists in the first place, the ADA suggests its Find-a-Dentist tool alongside recommendations from family, friends, your physician or your state dental society.

How Often Should You See a Dentist?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises adults to visit the dentist at least once a year, even if you wear dentures or have lost some or all of your teeth, along with brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing. The ADA’s answer is that it depends on the person: some people need to visit once or twice a year, and others may need more visits. Regular checkups catch problems early, when the ADA says treatment is likely to be simpler and more affordable. This is worth passing on to parents and grandparents who grew up seeing a dentist only when something hurt. The CDC also recommends at least one dental visit during pregnancy.
Paying for Dental Care: Insurance, Discount Plans, Medicaid and Health Centers
Before you book, ask the office which plans it accepts, and know what kind of plan you are holding.
- Dental insurance and dental discount plans are different products. The NAIC, the organization of state insurance regulators, warns that discount health cards, which include dental discount plans, are not insurance. A legitimate card gives you a reduced price at providers who accept it, but it pays nothing toward the bill, and fewer consumer protections exist for buyers. The NAIC’s advice is to call the dentist yourself to confirm they accept the card before you pay for it, and to be wary of high-pressure sales or requests for payment details before you have seen the provider list.
- Children on Medicaid or CHIP have dental coverage. Medicaid.gov states that dental services are a required benefit for children enrolled in Medicaid, covering at a minimum relief of pain and infections, restoration of teeth and maintenance of dental health, and that these services cannot be limited to emergencies. Separate CHIP programs must also cover dental care. For adults it is different: there are no minimum requirements for adult dental coverage, and each state decides what it offers.
- Community health centers are open to everyone. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) says health centers provide primary medical and dental care to people of all ages, whether or not they have health insurance, with fees on a sliding scale based on your ability to pay. This is a practical option for relatives who have recently arrived and are not yet insured.
Your Right to an Interpreter at the Dentist
An Albanian-speaking dentist is convenient, but it is not your only route to being understood. The HHS Office for Civil Rights explains that if English is not your primary language and you have difficulty communicating in it, you may need an interpreter or translated documents when using programs funded by HHS, and it lists visiting a doctor or dentist among its examples. Two federal laws, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, require those programs to provide language access services free of charge. The protection attaches to providers that receive federal funding, for instance those paid through Medicaid, so a fully private practice may not be covered. Where it applies, ask for an interpreter when you book, and do not rely on a child to translate a treatment plan or a consent form.
What the CDC Says About Traveling Abroad for Dental Work
If you are weighing the Albania-based clinics above, read the CDC’s guidance on medical tourism first. The CDC notes that standards for licensure, credentialing and accreditation in other countries may be less than what would be required in the United States, that complications can include infections, and that treating complications after you return home can be prolonged and may not be covered by your health insurance. It also warns that flying after surgery can increase the risk of blood clots.
The CDC’s practical steps: see a health care provider at least four to six weeks before the trip, bring copies of your medical records and a list of your medications, arrange follow-up care in the United States before you leave, check what your insurer will and will not cover, and consider travel health insurance that includes medical evacuation. Ask the clinic for copies of your treatment records when the work is done, and tell your US dentist what is planned so someone at home is ready to handle follow-up. ALB Connection lists these clinics but has not inspected them and cannot vouch for clinical outcomes.

ALB Connection has not inspected any clinic and cannot vouch for clinical standards. The CDC notes that standards for licensure, credentialing and accreditation in other countries may be lower than what is required in the United States. Risks are the same as any dental tourism: choose a reputable clinic, verify credentials, and plan for follow-up care back home. For any procedure, plan who will handle follow-up care at home before you travel. The CDC warns that treating complications after you return can be prolonged and may not be covered by your health insurance.

How do I check that a dentist is licensed in my state?
Search your state’s board of dentistry or professional licensing agency, which keeps a public lookup. New York’s Office of the Professions offers online verification and lists enforcement actions, and Illinois has a license lookup through its Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. The ADA notes every state board requires a dental degree, a written exam and a clinical assessment.
Does Medicaid cover dental care for my children?
Yes. Medicaid.gov states that dental services are a required benefit for all children enrolled in Medicaid, and children in separate CHIP programs must have dental coverage too. At a minimum it covers relief of pain and infections, restoration of teeth and maintenance of dental health. Adult dental coverage is decided by each state and has no federal minimum.
Can I ask for an Albanian interpreter at a dental office?
You can always ask. The HHS Office for Civil Rights says health programs that receive HHS funding must provide language access services free of charge under Title VI and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, and it names a dentist visit as an example. A private office that takes no federal funds may not be covered, so ask when you book.
