Kishat Ortodokse Shqiptare
The Albanian Orthodox community in America has a long history. The Orthodox Church in America’s directory dates St. George Cathedral in Boston to 1908, St. Elia in Jamestown, New York to 1911 and St. Nicholas in Southbridge, Massachusetts to 1912; the Detroit area parish dates from 1929, New York City’s from 1941 and Chicago’s from 1944. These parishes serve as both spiritual homes and cultural centers, hosting Albanian language classes, cultural events, and community gatherings.
Most Albanian Orthodox parishes in the United States belong to the Albanian Archdiocese of the Orthodox Church in America, which lists 11 parishes and has its seat at St. George Cathedral in South Boston. A second, smaller body, the Albanian Orthodox Diocese under the Ecumenical Patriarchate, includes St. Nicholas Albanian Orthodox Church in Chicago.
Kishat Katolike Shqiptare
Albanian Catholics, primarily from northern Albania and Kosovo, have established parishes and missions in several US cities. The Archdiocese of Detroit lists two Albanian parishes, St. Paul in Rochester Hills and Our Lady of Albanians in Southfield, and the Archdiocese of New York lists Our Lady of Shkodra in Hartsdale, Westchester County.
The Albanian American Islamic Center of NY and NJ, established in 1962 with centers in Brooklyn and in Garfield, New Jersey, and similar organizations across the country serve as gathering places for the Albanian Muslim community.

Two Albanian Orthodox Jurisdictions in America
Albanian Orthodox parishes in the United States belong to one of two church bodies, which is why two directories exist. The larger is the Albanian Archdiocese of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA). Its own website describes it as one of the three ethnic dioceses within the OCA, with its seat at St. George Cathedral, 523 East Broadway in South Boston. The archdiocese traces its origin to 22 March 1908, when the Divine Liturgy was first celebrated in the Albanian language in Boston, and it names Metropolitan Theofan (Fan) Noli as its founding bishop. The OCA directory lists 11 parishes for the archdiocese: four in Massachusetts, two in New York, two in Pennsylvania, and one each in Connecticut, Michigan and Ohio. The oldest founding dates it gives are 1908 for the Boston cathedral, 1911 for St. Elia in Jamestown and 1912 for St. Nicholas in Southbridge.
The second body is the Albanian Orthodox Diocese under the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. St. Nicholas and the Shrine of the Virgin Mary Albanian Orthodox Church in Chicago states on its website that it belongs to this diocese. The parish history says twelve men of Albanian descent organized the church in the spring of 1944, that Illinois recognized it on 18 June 1944, and that the present church at 2701 North Narragansett Avenue opened in 1961.
