Flights to Albania from the US always involve at least one connection: as of September 21, 2026, no airline flies nonstop between any US airport and Tirana. We checked the official airline list and the live departures board of Tirana International Airport on that date, and no US city appeared on either. When we checked again in mid-October 2026, we found no airline announcement of a US route. The only nonstop from North America has been a seasonal Air Transat flight from Toronto, which ran weekly in summer 2026.

The good news is that Tirana is one short flight from many of the big European hubs that American travelers already use. This guide covers the one-stop routings the airport itself lists, the other airports in and around Albania, what happened to Air Albania, and the passport rules for US citizens.

Fakte të shpejta

  • No nonstop flight connects the US and Albania as of September 21, 2026, according to Tirana International Airport’s own airline list and departures board.
  • Air Transat flew Toronto to Tirana nonstop once a week in summer 2026, with Toronto departures from June 18 to October 8, according to Air Transat. No 2027 dates had been announced as of mid-October 2026.
  • Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza (TIA) is the main gateway. Albania’s aviation safety plan for 2026 to 2028 lists two certified aerodromes, Tirana and Kukës, with Vlora still in certification.
  • Air Albania is not on the airport’s airline list. Albanian media reported in December 2025 that the Civil Aviation Authority suspended its operations.
  • US citizens need no visa and may generally stay up to one year, with a passport valid at least three more months, according to the US Embassy in Tirana.
  • ETIAS, the European Union‘s upcoming travel authorization, does not cover Albania, and the EU says it is not yet in operation.

Is There a Nonstop Flight From the US to Albania?

No. Tirana International Airport publishes a page titled “All the Airline companies currently serving at TIA.” When we read it on September 21, 2026, it named 45 carriers, and none of them is a US airline. The airport’s departures board for September 21 and 22, 2026 showed flights to cities across Europe, plus Istanbul, Antalya, Tel Aviv and Dubai. No US airport was on it.

That can change, and the airport posts new routes in its news section. Until the airport or an airline announces a US route, treat any website that promises a “direct flight” from New York, Chicago or Detroit to Tirana as describing a connecting itinerary.

One-Stop Routes Through European Hubs

The practical way to reach Albania is one ticket with one connection: you cross the Atlantic to a European hub, then take a short flight to Tirana with the same airline or its partner.

The table below uses only what the airport itself shows: the airline names from its official list, and the hub cities that appeared on its departures board on September 21 and 22, 2026. Schedules differ by day and season, so confirm your dates with the airline.

Route option Where you connect Airlines named by the airport Shënime
Nonstop from the US Not available None No US airline and no US city on the airport’s list or board as of September 21, 2026
Nonstop from Canada Toronto Pearson (YYZ) Air Transat Seasonal, once a week; the 2026 season ended in early October, and no 2027 dates were announced as of mid-October 2026
Via Germany Frankfurt or Munich Lufthansa Both cities were on the Tirana departures board
Via Austria Vjenë Austrian Airlines Austria is one of the Lufthansa Group’s hub countries
Via Switzerland Cyrih SWISS Switzerland is one of the Lufthansa Group’s hub countries
Via the United Kingdom London Heathrow British Airways Other London airports on the board are served by low-cost airlines
Via Italy Rome Fiumicino ITA Airways Many other Italian cities are served by low-cost airlines
Via Türkiye Stamboll Turkish Airlines The airport describes it as linking Tirana with Istanbul and a wide global network
Via Poland Warsaw LOT Polish Airlines On the departures board
Via Serbia Belgrade Air Serbia On the departures board
Via Greece Athinë Aegean Airlines, Sky Express Short flight; both airlines were on the board
Via France or the Netherlands Paris or Amsterdam Air France, Transavia Air France is on the airport’s list; Transavia flights to Paris Orly and Amsterdam were on the board
Low-cost, separate tickets Dozens of European cities Wizz Air, Ryanair, easyJet, Eurowings and others Usually sold separately from your transatlantic ticket

Whether a hub works for you depends on whether it has a flight from your home airport. The Lufthansa Group, for example, says its airlines connect passengers through hubs in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and Italy, and its summer 2026 schedule included Frankfurt flights to Washington, St. Louis and Raleigh/Durham. Each airline’s route map shows the US cities it serves.

One ticket or two?

When both flights are on one ticket, the airline that sold it normally rebooks you if the first flight runs late, and your bags are usually checked through. When you buy a cheap European flight separately, you are generally on your own if you miss it, so ask before you pay.

If this is more planning than you want to do, our directory of Albanian travel agencies in the US is a good place to start, especially for family trips and tickets that include Kosovo.

The Toronto Nonstop With Air Transat

The only nonstop between North America and Albania has been Air Transat’s Toronto to Tirana flight, which we covered in our news section when it launched. In its December 18, 2025 announcement, Tirana International Airport called it the first transoceanic flight in its history and said the first departure from Tirana would be June 19, 2026, with weekly flights through October 9, 2026.

Air Transat’s own announcement described the service as weekly, leaving Toronto every Thursday from June 18 through October 8, 2026, so the 2026 season is over. On September 21, 2026, the airport’s airline page still described Air Transat as connecting Tirana with Toronto “through direct seasonal flights.” We found no official 2027 dates as of mid-October 2026, so check Air Transat’s site before planning around a return of the route.

For Americans, this flight mostly matters if you live within reach of Toronto or can connect there. In the airport’s announcement, a Transat executive said the airline offers onward connections across North America through its own network and its partnership with Porter Airlines. You would be entering Canada on the way, so check Canada’s entry requirements for your passport. For community background, see our guide to Shqiptarët në Kanada.

What Happened to Air Albania?

Here is what can be verified. Air Albania is not on Tirana International Airport’s list of airlines currently serving the airport, as read on September 21, 2026, and no Air Albania flight appeared on the departures board that day or the next.

Albanian outlet Vox News reported on December 10, 2025 that the Civil Aviation Authority had suspended Air Albania’s operations for failing to comply with civil aviation standards, that the airline had not flown since December 7, and that the suspension would last until the company met its legal obligations. Turkish Airlines, which the same report said was selling its 49 percent stake, remains on the airport’s list and flies the Istanbul route itself.

We found no official notice that Air Albania has resumed flying. If you see Air Albania tickets offered for sale, confirm with the Civil Aviation Authority or the airport before paying.

Albania’s Airports: Tirana, Kukës and Vlora

Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza, airport code TIA, is at Rinas, outside the capital (the airport’s own bus page calls it Rinas Airport). For nearly every visitor it is the Albania airport. Our Tirana airport guide covers the terminal, arrivals and services in detail.

Albania’s National Aviation Safety Plan for 2026 to 2028, published through the International Civil Aviation Organization, states that the country has two certified aerodromes, both international: Tirana and Kukës International Airport “Zayed” (code KFZ) in the northeast. We could not find an official, current schedule of passenger flights at Kukës, so confirm with an airline before counting on it.

The same plan says Vlora International Airport, on the southern coast, “is in the certification process.” Lajmet e përditshme të Shqipërisë reported on April 11, 2026 that the opening had been postponed and that summer 2026 charter flights were canceled because certification was not complete. As of September 21, 2026, we found no official confirmation that Vlora has opened to commercial flights. Until it does, travelers headed for Riviera Shqiptare should plan on Tirana or Corfu.

Flying Into a Neighboring Country

Depending on where your family is from, another airport may be closer than Tirana. Expect a connection in Europe for these as well, and check each airport’s own airline list.

  • Pristina (PRN), Kosovo. The natural choice for Kosovo and handy for Kukës and the far north of Albania. See our Udhëzues udhëtimi për në Kosovë.
  • Skopje (SKP) and Ohrid (OHD), North Macedonia. Both are run by TAV Airports. Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport serves the lake region that Albania shares, with Pogradec on the Albanian shore.
  • Podgorica (TGD), Montenegro. Run by Airports of Montenegro, and a common choice for Shkodër and the far northwest.
  • Corfu (CFU), Greece, plus the ferry. Corfu Airport “Ioannis Kapodistrias” is operated by Fraport Greece. Ferry operators run daily boats from Corfu’s port to Sarandë, a crossing one operator describes as 30 minutes. Note that Fraport has announced Corfu’s runway will close for reconstruction from January 20 to 28, 2027.

Tirana’s airport also lists a shuttle service linking the airport with Pristina, Podgorica and Skopje, which is useful if your relatives live across a border but the better fare is into Tirana. Entry rules differ in each country, and Greece will fall under ETIAS once that system starts.

Passport, Visa and ETIAS Rules for US Citizens

The US Embassy in Tirana states that US citizens do not need a visa to enter Albania and are generally allowed to stay up to one year without a residence permit. To restart that one-year clock, the embassy says, you must leave Albania and stay out for at least 90 days. Your passport must have at least three months of validity remaining, and the embassy recommends six.

Albania’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs adds that, for travelers who do not need a visa, the passport must be valid for at least three months after the date you leave Albania and must have been issued within the last 10 years. Border officers may also ask for a return ticket or proof of accommodation, according to the embassy.

The embassy adds a caution for dual US and Albanian nationals: if you enter on your American passport and stay more than a year, you may be required to get authorization or risk a fine for overstaying. These rules belong to the Albanian government and can change, so confirm with an Albanian consulate in the US before a long stay. More detail is in Do You Need a Visa for Albania?

Does ETIAS apply to Albania?

No. The EU’s official ETIAS site lists the 30 European countries that will require the authorization, and Albania is not among them. The same page stated on September 21, 2026 that “ETIAS is currently not in operation” and that the start date will be announced several months in advance. US nationals are on the list of travelers who will need it for those 30 countries, which include Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece and Switzerland, so check the official site if your trip includes a stay in one of them.

Udhëtimi nga Aeroporti në Tiranë

The airport describes four ways into the city: taxi, bus, shuttle and car. Its taxi page says the ride to the center takes 20 to 25 minutes depending on traffic, that official airport taxis run 24 hours a day, and that you should use only the licensed yellow taxis carrying the operator’s logo and the airport logo, which park in front of the terminal.

The airport bus runs around the clock between the terminal and central Tirana, leaving every hour on the hour in both directions and taking 30 to 40 minutes, according to the airport’s bus page. In Tirana it stops behind the Palace of Opera and Ballet in the city center. A daytime line runs to Tirana’s South and North Bus Terminal, and the same page lists direct buses to Durrës, Fier, Vlorë and other cities, with current fares. The airport also lists car rental desks; read our notes on driving in Albania first. Once you are in town, our Udhëzues udhëtimi për në Tiranë takes over.

Booking Tips That Hold Up

We do not quote fares, and we have not found an official source that publishes a reliable “cheapest month” for this route. These habits help regardless of price:

  • Search TIA by code. Booking sites sometimes confuse Tirana with other cities. Also compare PRN if Kosovo is part of the trip.
  • Prefer a single ticket. Help during delays and checked-through bags are worth a lot on a long journey with a connection.
  • Book summer early. Summer is the busy season, and the airport’s own seasonal additions, like the June to October Toronto flight, follow that calendar. Our guide to the best time to visit Albania explains the seasons.
  • Check names against passports. The name on the ticket must match the passport you will travel on, which matters for dual nationals holding two passports with different spellings.

Pyetje të shpeshta

Are there direct flights to Albania from the USA?

No. As of September 21, 2026, Tirana International Airport’s airline list includes no US carrier, and its departures board shows no US destination. Every trip involves a connection, usually in a hub such as Frankfurt, Vienna, Zurich, London, Rome or Istanbul. The only North American nonstop has been Air Transat’s seasonal Toronto flight, which ran weekly in summer 2026.

What airport do you fly into for Albania?

Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza, code TIA, at Rinas outside the capital. Albania’s aviation safety plan for 2026 to 2028 also lists Kukës as a certified aerodrome and says Vlora is still in certification. Travelers bound for Kosovo can use Pristina, and some visitors to the south fly to Corfu and take the ferry to Sarandë.

Is Air Albania still flying?

Air Albania is not on Tirana International Airport’s list of airlines as of September 21, 2026. Albanian media reported in December 2025 that the Civil Aviation Authority suspended the airline’s operations for non-compliance with aviation standards. We found no official notice that flights have resumed. Turkish Airlines continues to fly between Istanbul and Tirana under its own name.

Do US citizens need a visa or ETIAS for Albania?

No visa is needed. The US Embassy in Tirana says US citizens may generally stay up to one year without a residence permit, with a passport valid at least three months. ETIAS does not apply to Albania, and the EU says the system is not yet operating. It will eventually apply to 30 other European countries you might connect through.

What is the cheapest way to fly to Albania?

We do not publish fares, since they change constantly. In general, compare one-ticket itineraries through several hubs, check Pristina as well as Tirana, and avoid the peak summer weeks if you can. Low-cost European airlines can help, but separate tickets carry more risk if a flight is delayed.
