All-inclusive resorts in Albania are a small but growing scene, concentrated on the central Adriatic coast around Durrës and Golem, with only a handful of larger hotels offering meal plans on the southern Ionian coast near Sarandë and Ksamil. Compared with mass-market Mediterranean destinations, Albania has fewer large all-inclusive resorts, which is part of its appeal for independent travelers but a consideration if a package holiday is what you want. This guide covers where to find all-inclusive options and what to expect.

Does Albania Have All-Inclusive Resorts?

Yes, but not on the scale of Spain, Turkey or Greece. Albania’s tourism grew quickly and somewhat organically, with an emphasis on beaches, guesthouses and mid-size hotels rather than giant resort complexes. All-inclusive options do exist, however, and they are most common on the central coast; in the south, meal plans are usually limited to a few larger hotels.

The Durrës and Golem Coast

The longest concentration of beach resorts in Albania runs south from Durrs through the Golem area. This central Adriatic strip has the country’s densest cluster of larger beach hotels, including some offering all-inclusive or half-board packages. The beaches here are long and sandy and the water shallow, making it family-friendly, though the setting is more built-up than the dramatic southern coast.

The Southern Ionian Coast

Further south, around Sarandë dhe Ksamil, the coast is more scenic, with turquoise water and pebble coves. Most hotels here are mid-size, with pools and breakfast rather than full board, and true all-inclusive packages are rare. The Riviera Shqiptare between Vlorë and Sarandë is generally more boutique and villa-oriented, while the Sarandë-Ksamil area has more of the larger hotels.

Çfarë të prisni

All-inclusive in Albania typically means accommodation, meals and some drinks included, often with a pool, beach access and some activities. Standards vary, and the very large, highly programmed resort experience found elsewhere in the Mediterranean is less common. Many travelers find that Albania’s mid-range and boutique hotels, combined with its excellent and affordable restaurants, offer better value than a strict all-inclusive package, since eating out is inexpensive and rewarding.

All-Inclusive vs Independent Travel

Albania is one of the easier and cheaper Mediterranean countries to travel independently, with good-value hotels and low restaurant prices. An all-inclusive package can still suit families or travelers who want a fixed budget and a stay-put beach holiday. But for those wanting to explore the coast, the mountains and the historic towns, a base hotel plus independent travel often makes more sense and costs little more. For the range of options, see hotelet më të mira në Shqipëri.

Këshilla për rezervime

  • Book the coast early for July and August, when the best beach hotels fill up.
  • Consider half-board as a flexible middle ground that lets you sample Albania’s restaurants.
  • Use a local travel agency for packages and transfers, see our directory of Albanian travel agencies.

Where the Resorts Are

Coast What you find Kujt i përshtatet
Durrës, Golem and Mali i Robit The largest concentration of resort hotels in the country, many with half board or all-inclusive plans, on a long sandy beach 45 minutes from the airport Families, package travelers, short stays
Lalëz Bay and Cape Rodon Newer resort complexes north of Durrës with pools, villas and private beach Couples and families wanting a self-contained stay near Tirana
Vlorë and Radhimë Larger hotels along the bay south of the city, with the Llogara Pass and the Riviera beyond A base for the south with resort comforts
Dhërmi, Himarë and the Riviera Boutique hotels and beach clubs rather than true all-inclusives; a few larger properties offer meal plans Scenery first, service second
Sarandë and Ksamil Mid-size hotels with pools and breakfast; all-inclusive is rare Beach days at Ksamil and Butrint nearby

What All-Inclusive Means in Albania

The term covers less than it does in Mexico or the Caribbean. An Albanian all-inclusive usually means three buffet meals, local drinks at set hours, a pool and a beach with sunbeds, and in the larger Durrës hotels an evening animation program. Imported spirits, à la carte restaurants and excursions cost extra, and the standard of the buffet varies widely. The upside is price: a week of full board on the Durrës coast in June or September generally costs less than a comparable package in Greece or Croatia. The downside is that the resort strip is not the Albania most visitors come for. If the plan is to sit by a pool, it works well; if the plan is to see the country, a resort makes a poor base.

Resort or Independent: A Quick Comparison

All-inclusive resort Independent travel
Kosto Predictable; low by European standards Lower still, because guesthouses and restaurants are cheap
Ushqim Buffet, international with Albanian dishes Fresh fish on the coast, home cooking inland, the best of the trip
Beaches Sandy, shallow, crowded in August The Riviera’s pebble coves and clear water
Lëvizja përreth Excursion buses Rental car, or buses and furgons
Muajt më të mirë June and September for value and space May to October

A middle path that many Albanian American families choose is a few resort nights on the Durrës coast for the children, then a rental car south to the Riviera and the historic towns. Our guides to Durrs, i/e/të Riviera Shqiptare dhe the best hotels in Albania cover both halves of that trip.

Questions to Ask Before You Book

Question Pse ka rëndësi
What exactly is included in the drinks? Local drinks at set hours is the norm; imported spirits and late-night bars usually cost extra
Is the beach private and how far is it? Some Durrës hotels are across a road from the sand; some have a section with sunbeds included
What is the meal format? Buffet in most; a few offer à la carte on some nights, which is worth having
Is there an animation program and can I avoid it? Family hotels run loud evening entertainment; ask for a room away from the stage
Which month? June and September are usually noticeably cheaper than August and far less crowded
How do I get there? Most resorts include or arrange an airport transfer; the Durrës coast is 45 minutes from the airport

Resorts and the Diaspora

The all-inclusive hotels of the Durrës coast draw most of their summer guests from Albania, Kosovo and the diaspora, and in July and August that is who fills them: extended families from Prishtina, Tirana and the diaspora who want a week by the sea with the children fed and the grandparents comfortable. For Albanian Americans that makes them a practical choice for a family reunion, since the price for a large group is low, the food is familiar, and the cousins can be in the pool while the adults talk. It also explains the atmosphere, which is a family holiday rather than a resort in the Caribbean sense: loud, warm, informal and full of children until late. Visitors who want polish and quiet should look at the boutique hotels of the Riviera in our best hotels guide; visitors who want a week that feels like an Albanian summer should book the Durrës coast in June or September and enjoy it.

A Sample Week

Five nights at a Golem resort with a rental car parked outside give the best of both. Spend the resort days on the beach and by the pool, then use the car for two or three half-day trips: Durrës and its amphitheatre twenty minutes north, Krujë and Skanderbeg’s castle an hour away, Tirana for an evening in Blloku, and Cape Rodon for a wild beach and Skanderbeg’s ruined fort. Add two nights on the Riviera at the end, three hours south, for the clear water the Durrës coast lacks. Our guides to Krujë dhe Tiranë cover the excursions.

The honest summary is that Albania does resorts adequately and everything else brilliantly. Use a resort for what it is good at, a few easy days with the family by a warm and shallow sea, and spend the rest of the trip on the coast and in the towns that no resort can imitate. That combination, at Albanian prices, is hard to beat anywhere on the Mediterranean.

Book June or September, bring the family, and let the country do the rest.

The short version: all-inclusive resorts in Albania exist, mostly around Durrës and Golem, while the south still favors independent hotels.

Pyetje të shpeshta

Does Albania have all-inclusive resorts?

Yes, though fewer than other Mediterranean destinations. They are concentrated on the central coast around Durrës and Golem; in the south near Sarandë and Ksamil, a few larger hotels offer meal plans, but true all-inclusives are rare.

Where are the best all-inclusive areas in Albania?

The Durrës-Golem coast, along with Lalëz Bay and Cape Rodon to the north, for family beach resorts. The Sarandë-Ksamil area in the south is more scenic, but its hotels mostly offer breakfast or half board rather than all-inclusive.

Is all-inclusive good value in Albania?

It can be, but because restaurants are inexpensive and excellent, many travelers get better value from a mid-range hotel plus eating out.

Should I do all-inclusive or travel independently in Albania?

All-inclusive suits stay-put family beach holidays. For exploring the coast, mountains and towns, an independent trip with a base hotel usually works better.
