The Albanian-American community is one of the most established diaspora groups in the United States, with roots going back over a century. The Census ancestry count includes only people who report “Albanian” ancestry specifically, and does not include ethnic Albanians who report their origin as Kosovo, North Macedonia, or Montenegro.

228,504 Americans reported Albanian ancestry in the latest U.S. Census (ACS 2020-2024 5-Year). The true number is higher, because the census ancestry question counts only people who write in "Albanian" and excludes many who report their origin as Kosovo, North Macedonia, or Montenegro. Immigration Waves

Albanian immigration to the US has come in several distinct waves. The earliest settlers arrived in the late 1800s and early 1900s, primarily from southern Albania, settling in Boston, New York, and industrial cities. A second wave came after World War II, including political refugees from the communist regime. The largest wave came in the 1990s during and after the Kosovo War, bringing hundreds of thousands of Kosovar Albanians to the United States. Read our full article on Albanian immigration history.
