Arber Mullai’s story is a testament to determination, cultural pride, and the relentless pursuit of the entrepreneurial dream. From his humble beginnings in Albania to becoming one of the co-owners of La Voglia Italian Restaurant and La Voglia Mediterranean Restaurant in Philadelphia, PA, with his partners Ermir Madani and David Marques, Arber’s journey is not just about business success but community, resilience, and the fusion of cultures through cuisine.

From Albania to American Entrepreneur

Arber moved to the United States on July 4th, 2013, marking the start of a new chapter in his life. After graduating high school, Arber plunged into the restaurant industry as a busboy. His climb from busboy to business owner is a narrative of ambition, learning, and evolution within the hospitality world. Alongside his best friend, Arber opened the first La Voglia location in Warminster in May of 2020 amidst the challenging backdrop of the pandemic. Despite the uncertain times, their confidence in their service and product propelled them forward.

The Inspiration Behind La Voglia

His extensive experience influenced Arber’s foray into Italian cuisine in Italian restaurants, where he started his career and learned the ropes of the industry. This decision was also rooted in family tradition—his uncle owns several Italian restaurants, instilling a deep appreciation and understanding of Italian culinary arts in Arber. Arber and his business partner, well-versed in Italian cuisine from their respective career paths, embarked on this venture with a shared vision and expertise.

Entrepreneurial Spirit and Vision

For Arber, owning a business was always the goal. The desire to work for himself, to create something of his own, outweighed the allure of stable employment elsewhere. This entrepreneurial spirit is a trait he identifies as quintessentially Albanian—a reflection of a community that values independence, hard work, and self-reliance.

Learning Through Leadership

Transitioning from employee to employer, Arber quickly learned that business ownership comes with challenges and responsibilities. From maintaining equipment to managing staff and ensuring customer satisfaction, the role of a business owner is all-encompassing. Arber emphasizes the importance of being a team leader, a mentor, and a pillar of support for his staff, fostering an environment of mutual respect and dedication.

Cultivating Customer Relationships

La Voglia stands out not just for its culinary excellence but for its warm, inclusive atmosphere. Arber credits his European upbringing for his social nature, which has allowed him to build lasting relationships with his customers. Many have become like family, a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to genuine hospitality and community engagement.

Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Success

The biggest hurdle for La Voglia came with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Navigating lockdowns and labor shortages tested Arber’s resilience and adaptability. La Voglia weathered the storm through teamwork and dedication, emerging more robust and united. The restaurant has since garnered numerous accolades, including being voted the best Italian food in Bucks County, recognizing its unwavering commitment to quality and service.

Looking Ahead

As for the future, Arber plans to expand La Voglia, though he intends to stay within the local area to maintain a hands-on approach to management. His advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: follow your dreams, work hard, and not be afraid to leap.

A Culinary Bridge Between Cultures

La Voglia is more than a restaurant; it’s a cultural bridge. Arber and his team introduce their patrons to Italian and Mediterranean flavors and invite them to experience Albanian hospitality and traditions. This cultural exchange enriches the community, creating a space where diversity is celebrated, and connections are forged over shared meals.

Arber Mullai’s success with La Voglia Italian Restaurant and La Voglia Mediterranean Restaurant is a shining example of how passion, hard work, and a sense of community can turn dreams into reality. In Arber’s story, we find inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs and a reminder of the enriching power of cultural exchange. La Voglia is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Albanian-American entrepreneurial journey, serving not just food but stories, connections, and a piece of home.
