Overview

The Prosecutorial Council of Kosovo is an independent institution in the exercise of its functions with the aim of ensuring that the State Prosecutor is independent, professional and impartial and reflects the multi-ethnic nature of the Republic of Kosovo including the accepted international principles of gender equality. This mandate is defined by the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo (2008). Until the issuance of the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo (2008), the mandate related to the management of the prosecutorial system, which is already exercised by the Council, was exercised by a joint body, known as the Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Kosovo. The creation of the constitutional basis and the issuance of the Law on the Prosecution Council of Kosovo, which entered into force in January 2011, enabled the establishment of the Council as an independent institution in the management of the prosecution system of Kosovo. In this mandate, the Council had 9 members, while the first meeting of the Council was held on February 7, 2011.
