British Council
Overview
We have been operating in Kosovo since 1999. In Kosovo, we work every year with thousands of students, teachers, policy makers, academics, researchers, creative people and entrepreneurs.
We uniquely combine the deep expertise the UK offers in arts and culture, education and the English language, with our global presence and relationships in over 100 countries, with our unparalleled access to young people and influencers with our creative ideas.
We work directly with individuals to help them gain the skills, confidence and connections to transform their lives for a better world in partnership with the UK. We support them to build networks and explore creative ideas, learn English, get a high-quality education and gain internationally recognized qualifications.
In the last 14 years after the end of the conflict, Kosovo has made significant progress in establishing the foundations of a democratic society and a market-led economy. After almost a decade of UN administration, Kosovo became independent in 2008. September 2012 marked the end of “supervised independence”. The 25-nation International Steering Group (ISG), established in 2008 to guide democratic development, promote good governance, multi-ethnicity and the rule of law, announced its plans – with subsequent support from Parliament – to close International Civilian Office (ICO), which until then was the final authority regarding the interpretation of the Comprehensive Agreement Proposal (Ahtisaari Plan).
